In addition to trading tight end Chris Herndon to Minnesota, the Jets released or waived 26 players and kept defensive lineman Kyle Phillips on the PUP list to cut down to their initial 53-man roster.
All 10 of the Jets’ 2021 draftees made the initial roster, and to get to 53, the Jets made the following moves:
RELEASED: QB Josh Johnson; TE Dan Brown and Ryan Griffin; DL Ronald Blair; and S Sharrod Neasman.
WAIVED: QB James Morgan; RB Josh Adams; WR Lawrence Cager, D.J. Montgomery, and Vyncint Smith; TE Kenny Yeboah; OL Grant Hermanns, Corey Levin, David Moore, Jimmy Murray, and Isaiah Williams; DL Hamilcar Rashed, Tanzel Smart, and Jeremiah Valoaga; LB Aaron Adeoye, Noah Dawkins, Milo Eifler, and Del’Shawn Phillips; and DB Elijah Campbell, J.T. Hassell, and Lamar Jackson.
The moves leave Mike White as the initial backup for rookie Zach Wilson, and the PUP extension means Phillips, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury last October, will miss at least six weeks.

"This is by the far the worst part of football and for some of them the dream of playing professional football is over," head coach Robert Saleh said in his press briefing Tuesday afternoon. "For some, they're still going to be able to continue on. You never want to be the one to deliver bad news and you just hurt for them because you know how much effort and how much work they've put into it. So it's not easy, it will never be easy and it doesn't matter what role you are — whenever you have to tell somebody that their dream of playing professional football is possibly over, it's not a good thing."
