ESPN’s John Parry, a former NFL official, immediately rained on the Jets’ parade after their improbable overtime win thanks to Xavier Gipson’s punt return for a touchdown.
The Monday Night Football rules expert pointed out a possible missed tripping call on Gipson’s return, and says it puts an “asterisk” on what was one of Gang Green’s most thrilling wins in years.
"You've gotta put an asterisk on it because there's a tripping call that was not made,” Parry said. “A trip, a leg whip, right near the 23-yard line…which would have brought the touchdown back.”
Parry was noting Jets linebacker Chazz Surratt trying to throw a block, and seemingly sticking his leg out on his way down to the turf. It seemed like a borderline call, but Jets fans quickly ripped Parry on social media for insinuating that the Jets win wasn’t on fair grounds.
Of course, even if a penalty was called, the Jets were seemingly well within field goal range to secure the win anyway.
