Aaron Rodgers told reporters that he tweaked his calf at Jets OTAs on Tuesday, something he didn’t have much concern about, though he didn’t participate in quarterback drills as a result of the injury.
Instead, Rodgers looked on with Jets coaches, watching the rest of practice while Jets fans wondered with worry what had happened to their first star quarterback in decades.
Evan believes Rodgers’ assertion that the calf tweak is very minor, but he says it should serve as a cautious reminder for Jets fans in terms of who they’re hoping will finally carry the team on a playoff run.
“You gotta admit, it’s a little concerning,” Evan said. “This is a reminder. When you acquire guys who are old and have an injury history, you cannot be surprised when they show they’re old or get hurt.
“A May 23 injury is not my concern, but Aaron Rodgers is almost 40 years old. He had an injury, it was a thumb injury, that affected his play a year ago. It’s just a reminder that as enamored I am with him and that I’m glad the Jets got him, let’s not forget that this can happen.”
While Rodgers downplayed the issue, Evan said the fact that it happened during little activity should also be a concern, as an aging quarterback could break down through far less arduous physical acts than younger players, and Rodgers’ health will be a major factor, and potentially a major unknown, this season.
“He hurt his ankle doing what, walking across the field? That’s a problem,” Evan said. “I’m not concerned about this injury. But it’s a reminder when you’re 39-40 years old, injuries can happen, and that’s the kind of thing that can derail all of this.”
