Joe Douglas says Mekhi Becton is still rehabbing knee: 'Just took longer than anyone predicted'

Mekhi Becton has been a big question mark hovering over the Jets offseason, not attending the team’s voluntary pre-draft workouts while working out in Dallas.

But Joe Douglas joined Tiki and Tierney on Tuesday and only raised more concern around the once promising offensive lineman, as the Jets GM said that Becton is still rehabbing from the knee injury he suffered way back in Week 1.

“We’ve had good conversations,” Douglas said. “We feel like we have pretty good tabs on his weight. He’s in a good place right now. He’s still rehabbing, he’s still getting healthy. The season doesn’t start tomorrow, so when he gets here after the baby is born for mandatory mini camp…I know how important it is for him to come back in the best shape, the best possible health he can be.

“I think it was a situation where it really isn’t anyone’s fault, player or medical. This one just took longer than anyone predicted. It wasn’t a lack of effort or trying, it just ran a little long.”

“A little long” seems like an understatement, as the initial outlook of Becton’s injury in the season opener suggested he would miss a few weeks. Instead, he missed the entire season, and is now still working his way back to 100 percent. Amid previous weight and now health concerns, Becton’s promising rookie season feels like a long time ago. But Douglas still believes he will be an impact player for Gang Green this season.

“He has a lot of pride and he’s a competitive guy. He’s at the point now where he wants to prove some naysayers wrong and I think he’s gonna do everything in his power to get to that point come the start of training camp,” Douglas said.

As for Becton’s knee, Douglas said he is still confident Becton will be healthy and ready to go for mandatory training camp.

“The communication has been great between his doctors and our doctors, and he’s on a good course right now to be ready for training camp.”
