UPDATE: The Jets appear to have found their next head coach, as Adam Schefter reports that Gang Green has named Glenn their head coach, finalizing an outcome that many expected at this point.
Glenn was scheduled to interview for the Saints job as well, but he returns to the organization that drafted him in the first round 30 years ago.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Gang Green has made Aaron Glenn its top choice to replace Robert Saleh, and hope to lock up the Lions defensive coordinator when he arrives in Florham Park for his second interview on Tuesday.
Per Rapoport, Glenn could be named the franchise’s next head coach by end of business on Tuesday.
Glenn was requested to interview with all but one team that had a head coaching vacancy at the start of the playoffs, but he has seemed to covet the Jets job, as he used to play for New York for eight seasons after being drafted by the organization.
The Jets’ primary opposition for Glenn is the Saints, who he is set to have a second interview with as well after his meeting with the Jets, who hope to make another interview with New Orleans unnecessary.
Glenn’s Lions defense remained a top-10 unit throughout the season despite an unprecedented wave of injuries, guiding Detroit to the top seed in the NFC. But his shorthanded defense was picked apart by Jayden Daniels and the Commanders in the divisional round in a 45-31 loss.
If the Jets do indeed hire Glenn, he would be the latest defensive coordinator with no head coaching experience to take the job in New York, as Saleh was in the same boat when he was hired.
