Mekhi Becton says he feels good and ready to play as questions swirl about his weight and the shape he was in during Jets mandatory minicamp, and Boomer believes the concern is absolutely warranted after seeing Becton at the podium taking questions on Wednesday.
“Looking at him in his clothes, as opposed to on the football field, this guy is approaching 400 pounds,” Boomer said during Thursday’s show. “To me, he looks like he weighs somewhere between 395 and 400. That is not good.
“His health is not gonna be good, and I mean all sorts of things. I’m not just talking about his ankle or his knee or anything else. I’m talking about everything in general. Four hundred pounds is not a healthy human being.”
Gang Green and head coach Robert Saleh have made subtle remarks to suggest that Becton needs to find a way to manage his weight and find the optimal weight for someone of his size to maintain speed and avoid injury.
Becton weighed around 363 pounds as a rookie, but was approaching 400 while rehabbing his knee injury last season, according to an ESPN report.
That knee injury cost Becton the rest of his sophomore season after getting hurt in the season opener, and Boomer fears the promising offensive lineman is still at the weight he was reported to be when recovering from injury.
“I would bet 100 dollars that he’s over 395,” Boomer said. “I know what I’m looking at. I’m looking at an unhealthy guy. I’m looking at a guy who can wear a t-shirt and does whatever he wants on Instagram. I was waiting to see what this looked like, and this ain’t good. It ain’t good.
“You can read between the lines. There’s no way [the Jets] can be happy with him. No way.”
