Boomer wouldn't be shocked if Mekhi Becton doesn't play for Jets this season

Boomer estimated during Thursday’s show that Mekhi Becton must weigh between 395 and 400 pounds after seeing him at Jets mandatory minicamp.

As a result, Boomer wouldn’t be shocked if the former first-round pick never suits up for Gang Green this season.

“If somebody offered me reasonable odds,” Boomer said during Friday’s show. “I would bet that Mekhi Becton doesn’t play for the Jets this year.

“If he comes back, I don’t know if he’s gonna leave, but if he comes back and is still as big as he is and he has done nothing about this…I don’t know. He may not.”

Robert Saleh declined to comment on Becton’s weight when asked about it earlier this week, but the team has maintained its faith in the offensive tackle, but has made it known that he needs to find his optimal weight to maintain his speed and stay healthy.

Boomer isn’t sure Becton will be able to do that, and as a result, Jets fans may not see him on the field this season. But he knows Becton’s promising rookie season isn’t that far in the rearview, and the Jets will do whatever they can to get him at his optimal size.

“Training camp is not that far away,” Boomer said. “Let’s just say he’s 395, and he comes back at 375. I think they can say ‘OK, we’re seeing some progress and we feel good about you moving forward.’ Then when they get him here, they can help him even further with his weight issues and what he likes to eat.”
