Aaron Rodgers' failed era with the Jets is reportedly over.
According to NFL insider Jay Glazer, Rodgers flew back to New Jersey to meet with the team's new regime last week, only to be told that the new leadership group was moving on without him. New head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey will now be tasked with finding the next hopeful franchise quarterback, which has resulted in failure in recent years, from drafting Zach Wilson with the second overall pick to making the blockbuster trade for Rodgers in 2023.
Per The Athletic, the decision to move on from Rodgers came after Woody Johnson gathered feedback from Glenn and other members of the coaching staff.
Rodgers' arrival in New York sparked a hype not seen around the organization in decades, but it turned into a monumental disappointment. The future Hall of Famer suffered a season-ending Achilles injury just four snaps into his debut with the team, and in his first full season, the Jets offense was nearly as bad as it was with Wilson a year prior, resulting in Robert Saleh being fired after just five games this season, and Joe Douglas was fired as GM. Rodgers struggled for much of the season, even after the team acquired favorite receiver target Davante Adams, who could soon follow Rodgers out the door.
The 41-year-old finished the season with 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while posting one of the lowest quarterback ratings of his career in which he played at least 15 games.
Assuming the Jets spread out Rodgers' cap hit over the next two seasons, they will inherit $14 million in dead cap money in 2025, and $35 million in 2026.
The Jets will now have Tyrod Taylor and Jordan Travis as internal quarterback options for next season, and they hold the No. 7 pick in the NFL Draft.
