Jets place Mekhi Becton, four others on PUP list ahead of camp opening

It’s official: Mekhi Becton will not be ready for the start of training camp…or at least Day 1.

Becton was one of five players the Jets placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list on Thursday, along with tight end C.J. Uzomah, defensive end Carl Lawson, and offensive linemen George Fant and Dru Samia.

The Jets can take any of these players off PUP any time, as the remain on the active roster and can participate in meetings and use team facilities ahead of training camp’s official opening on Tuesday.

Becton, of course, was injured in the Jets’ season opener last year and ended missing the entire season, as well as minicamp and OTAs this summer, due to slow healing from his knee injury – a situation that has led many in the media to question him and his future.

However, in an interview with CBS Sports this week, head coach Robert Saleh was optimistic Becton was on the right track.

“Mekhi’s been really good over the past 40 days. He’s been in the building every day. He’s been putting in the work,” Saleh said. “He’s got no restrictions from my understanding with regards to the knee. His weight’s getting down. He looks really good, and we’re really excited about the direction he’s heading.’’
