Robert Saleh’s Jets have completely turned their season around since the head coach declared that he was “taking receipts” on all of those who doubted or clowned the state of the team early in Saleh’s second season as head coach.
But Saleh doesn’t see his statements and the team’s improved play as necessarily related, and admitted he would actually like for his receipts claim to be forgotten.
“I kind of want it to go away, I’m not gonna lie to you,” Saleh laughed. “You guys know me. It was a little off character, because I try to keep a measured response up here. That’s more for them. I just want it to go away.”
Perhaps it became a rallying cry for the 5-2 Jets, or perhaps it was just a coincidence that the team, especially its young core around Saleh, has played much better since then. Either way, Saleh feels it was out of character, and would likely do it differently if he had a chance.
“You just want to go play football, eliminate all distractions,” Saleh said. “You try your best to keep all the distractions on me and out of the locker room. That’s basically what my whole charge is, to keep the locker room clean so it can play fast and play free and think about football. Whatever I have to do to make sure that happens, I’ll do.”
