Sauce Gardner has big-time aspirations for his NFL future, as he told Travis and Jason Kelce on the latest episode of New Heights.
Gardner, the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, wants to become the first cornerback to ever take home an MVP award.
“I might have to go get MVP,” Gardner told the Kelce brothers.
The Kelces reminded Gardner that normally quarterbacks take home the award, as 46 have won MVP, compared to just two defensive players in NFL history.
“Why is there so many quarterbacks?” Gardner said. “When you think MVP, it’s like quarterbacks be the first ballot.”
Meanwhile, Gardner is hoping he will be playing alongside a former MVP in Aaron Rodgers, who he started communicating with this offseason when rumors of the future Hall of Famer potentially joining Gang Green began to surface.
“My first text message to him was a picture of the cheesehead,” Gardner said, noting the cheesehead he got from a fan after the Jets beat Rodgers and the Packers at Lambeau Field last season. “I didn’t even say no words, I just sent him a picture and hit send. He just texted me back, ‘Why do you have that? Lol.’”
The two have continued to talk, while Rodgers has publicly stated his desire to play for the Jets. A trade still hasn’t been worked out yet, so Gardner can only wait, and hope.
“I would never expect to be able to have somebody like that on my team,” Gardner said. “I’m hoping it happens. That would just be great for me and the whole organization.”
