Jets trading for Browns' Kareem Hunt 'makes too much sense for both teams not to do'

The New York Jets have rattled off four straight wins after a 1-2 start to catapult them into second place in the AFC East. They now have the same amount of wins as the first-place Bills at 5-1.

The Jets’ running game has been one of their strengths this season and that took a big hit this week with Breece Hall suffering a torn ACL. The rookie was coming off his first career 100-yard game (116, to be exact) against the Packers and broke free for a 62-yard touchdown prior to the injury on Sunday.

New York is surprisingly in a position to contend with the NFL trade deadline approaching and perhaps there is a move to be made.

Andrew Fillipponi and Danny Parkins of the Audacy Original Podcast “1st & Pod” floated the idea of the Jets trading for Browns running back Kareem Hunt.

“If I’m the Jets I would trade for Kareem Hunt tomorrow,” Fillipponi said (10:10 in player above). “Makes too much sense. Hunt’s in the last year of his deal… He was like barely used. Chubb’s great, you want to give it to him. He averages like nine yards a carry when he actually gets the ball. The Browns are now 2-5. He wanted to leave there anyway. This is the perfect situation. Trade him to New York.”

Chubb is the clear starter in Cleveland and that was shown this week. He had 16 carries for 91 yards while Hunt had just four yards on five carries. This came after Hunt had just four carries the week prior.

Parkins wasn’t so sure as to why New York would want to trade for Hunt, so Fillipponi explained how he’d be looking at the situation if he was the Jets.

“I’m 5-2 right now. My other running back is more of a second running back who’s a complementary back,” he said. “I do that. Even if he has a great second half for me, who cares, Hall will come back off his ACL, Hunt will become a free agent, and he’s a guy that I know can kind of fit the mentality of our team.”

The Jets wanted to pound the ball with Hall a lot and Hunt could do that for them, too.

“I think Hunt still has that,” Fillipponi continued. “I think Hunt’s still maybe not a top 15 running back, but I think he’s a top 25 running back in the league.”

Parkins pointed out that the 49ers trading for Christian McCaffrey made sense as a Super Bowl swing, but the Jets may not have that ceiling.

“You got to go for the playoffs now,” Fillipponi said. “They’ve gotten a bunch of picks… I think you trade a Day 3 pick for him. And the Browns, they’re not an old-school front office. They know the writing’s on the wall with Hunt. They know the writing’s on the wall this season. I think they’d flip him for like a sixth that might turn into a fifth based on how the Jets’ season goes.”

The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday, November 1st. There’s still a week for these teams to discuss and possibly pull the trigger on a deal.

“That’s a trade that makes too much sense for both teams not to do,” Fillipponi concluded.
