Evan Roberts: Jets should dump Zach Wilson at end of season if he doesn't prove himself as the answer

Zach Wilson just turned 23 years old last week, and is getting set to begin his second NFL season after being thrown into the fire as a rookie under center for the rebuilding Jets.

But Evan Roberts is done waiting, and done being patient. He says if Gang Green finds itself in a similar spot as the end of last season by the end of this season, then it’s time to move on and find a new potential franchise quarterback.

“If Zach Wilson isn’t the guy - if we’re sitting here late in the season and we’re like ‘Eh, he’s not the guy,’ then I want to get rid of him next year,” Evan said.

“I don’t want to waste my time anymore. I’m 39…I don’t know how many more years we’re gonna have on this planet.”

The former second overall pick posted a 66.7 passer rating last season for a poor Jets team in the beginning of a rebuild. Heading into his second NFL season, head coach Robert Saleh is raving about Wilson’s growth, but Evan is ready to move on if that doesn’t translate to results on the field, then he doesn’t want to get caught in a “what-if” like the Giants have with Daniel Jones.

“I don’t want to waste seasons with quarterbacks that I know aren’t the answer,” Evan said. “It’s a terrible feeling. You should still root for them to win every single game and hope we’re all wrong.

“I don’t think any of us want to sit here through, ‘We already know the outcome of the movie, but we’re gonna watch it anyway…If we know Zach's not the answer by the end of this season, get rid of him.”
