Carton rips Jets, Robert Saleh for handling of Zach Wilson recovery outlook

Just days after Robert Saleh told reporters that Zach Wilson was a possibility to start Week 1, the Jets head coach got in front of those same reporters and said that the sophomore quarterback was likely out until at least Week 4.

That didn’t sit well with Craig Carton, who said it ranks among the worst ways the team has handled conveying a message to the media and the fans.

“You told us three days ago that Zach Wilson might - no guarantee - be ready for Week 1,” Craig said “We got excited about our supposed franchise quarterback potentially being ready for Week 1.

“To come out [Wednesday] and throw out the caveat of ‘I don’t want to answer any more questions about this,’ but he’s not gonna be ready, best-case scenario, until Week 4, is one of the all-time biggest screw-ups this franchise has had in their dealing with the public that I’ve ever witnessed.”

Evan also brought up how Saleh initially expressed optimism about Mekhi Becton’s knee injury, which was later revealed to be another season-ending injury.

“That’s ‘You know me, I’m an eternal optimist,’” Craig said. “Shut up!”

Evan hasn’t been a fan of how Saleh has handled injuries either, and says so far, the second-year head coach hasn’t shown he is capable of handling those kind of situations, especially in the New York spotlight.

“It’s what really concerns me going into year two,” Evan said. “Part of this job is handling the media. Part of his talking to the fans, handling uncomfortable or different questions, or even easy questions like ‘Is your quarterback healthy enough to play?’ Robert Saleh, as he begins the year of criticism and scrutiny, looks like a guy who really can’t handle that.”
