Boomer & Gio float Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr, Baker Mayfield as Jets QB solutions

Boomer and Gio discussed the possibility of Lamar Jackson going to the Jets at length on Wednesday, but what about some other veteran quarterback candidates that can provide an upgrade over Zach Wilson?

The duo hit them all, starting with Jimmy Garoppolo, who Gio has no desire for Gang Green to pursue.

“Jimmy Garoppolo has won a lot of games, I give him credit for that, but you want to talk about getting hurt? He’s hurt more than Lamar Jackson is hurt,” Gio said. “He has also shown that a rookie seventh rounder can come in and run the offense better than he can…If they were gonna bring him in, then keep Mike LaFleur. And they didn’t do that.”

On the plus side, Boomer noted Garoppolo wouldn’t cost any player or draft assets like Jackson would.

“He’s an unfettered free agent,” Boomer said. “He’s gonna be unrestricted and free. All it takes to get him is money.”

That would not be the case for Derek Carr, who would have to be acquired via trade, and Boomer says the veteran would likely want a new deal after waiving his no-trade clause.

“Derek Carr is still under contract at the moment,” Boomer said. “If you accept Derek Carr and he’s coming here, the only way he’s gonna accept that trade is if he gets a new deal.”

Boomer also brought up another name that is sure to be divisive among Jets fans: Baker Mayfield.

“Then of course, there’s Baker Mayfield. He’s another guy that can be a short-term solution, or problem, depending on how you look at it,” Boomer said. “He’s a wild card. Baker Mayfield is on the lower tier from those four, but he’s still a possibility.”
