Joe Benigno came away from the Jets’ Week 1 win feeling confident about the rest of the season, even after losing Aaron Rodgers to a torn Achilles.
Joe felt so good after watching the Gang Green defense force four turnovers, he didn’t see why the Jets couldn’t still win the division.
It was a much different story after Week 2, as Joe went off on the defense, the offensive line, and everything in between in a classic Joe rant while on his weekly spot with Evan and Tiki.
“They got pushed around all day,” Joe said of the Jets defense. “They got their rear ends handed to them. The opening drive, right down the field for a touchdown. Everything we have seen from Jets defense over the last 10 years, we saw yesterday. No pass rush, missed tackles, killer penalties…not getting turnovers.
“The greatest cornerback that ever lived, can he catch the you-know-what ball? Hey, Sauce Gardner. You want to be great? Catch the GD freaking ball! The whole dynamic of this game changed. Catch the freaking ball! I’m sick and tired of this crap from my defense. D.J. Reed is giving me this crap about the ’85 years. What??”
Joe wasn’t close to being done, also taking aim at the play calling on offense and the continued struggles of the offensive line.
“We get the fake punt, I’m going crazy…then we hand it off to Breece Hall, he gets nine yards. It’s 2nd and 1. Do they give it to Breece again? No, they throw a freaking pass!” Joe said. “Is Patrick Mahomes our quarterback? Then, on 3rd and 1, it’s a quarterback sneak, and it’s not even close.
“It is time to change this offensive line. Here’s what I would do, and I told the coach about this. We had a nice discussion last night, back and forth, when I texted him and said, ‘Hey coach, so much for the great defense,’ and he was upset about it. Duane Brown, out, Becton goes back to left tackle, AVT is the right tackle, you bring this kid [Joe] Tippmann in, make him a guard, and let’s see what happens.”
Now, the Patriots are on deck, and Joe doesn’t care how early in the season it is: the Jets have to win to avoid a season that will quickly become a colossal disappointment if they can’t finally solve the Patriots.
“This week coming up is the biggest game Robert Saleh has coached to date,” Joe said. “You have to win this game. I understand it’s only Week 3. If they lose this game, they are on their way to disaster…they have to win this game.”
