Joe Benigno will always live and die by his New York Jets, but after Sunday’s embarrassing 40-12 loss to the Bills, he has to admit a sad truth:
“(Sunday) was rock bottom, and here’s the bottom line: they are now the worst franchise in professional sports,” Joe told Shaun & Tiki on Monday. “For 20 years, the Knicks were the worst franchise in professional sports, and Jim Dolan was the worst owner. Now, it’s the Jets and Woody Johnson.”
One more week and this season is over, and it’s time to look for a new head coach and a new GM AGAIN, with the next ones being the seventh and sixth, respectively, full-timers since Bill Parcells left after the 2000 season.
“They have to get this GM and head coaching situation right,” Joe said. “There is no gray area here, and I'm at the point now where if everybody goes, I don't even care, because it's so important to change…I hate the word culture, I like to use the word karma, and it's so important to change the karma of this franchise. It’s 56 years without a Super Bowl appearance, 14 years without the playoffs, nine without a winning season, five straight with 10-plus losses - how much can I take?”
No feast, just famine since Rex Ryan led the team to back-to-back AFC Championship Games, and maybe what’s old should be new again?
“I’m big on Rex; as far as I'm concerned, next to Weeb Eubank, who won me a championship a million years ago, he’s the best coach we ever had, and he wants to coach this team,” Joe said. “It’s so important to me that he wants this job, and he has something to prove; I don't know if he's gonna get the job, but he has a major chip on his shoulder, and I would do a dance if Rex was the coach.”
To Shaun, there’s no way you can move forward with Aaron Rodgers if you have a new regime, and while Joe wouldn’t mind a Rodgers return, he gets it.
“Like I said, I’m at the point where if everybody goes, I don’t care. At this point, it’s about the organization getting a general manager and head coach in here that are going to be on the same page,” Joe said. “There has to be accountability with this team because there absolutely is no accountability. It’s a joke, it makes you absolutely crazy, and it has to change. This is it – I don’t want another first-time coordinator who will be gone in three years. I think you need a guy that understands the situation here, and that's why I so like Rex. I’d be happy with Mike Vrabel, I love Brian Flores, but I’m down with Rex.”
