Joe Benigno shreds Robert Saleh, Jets coaching staff: 'Freaking disaster'

The New York Jets are a more talented team this year than last, so it’s hard not to point to coaching as one of the primary factors that has felled New York this season.

And that’s where Joe Benigno is directing most of his frustration.

The Jets were dispatched Sunday 27-12 by a Cincinnati Bengals team that had not yet won a game. Joe Flacco came back down to earth, which hurt, but giving up four penalties for 55 yards didn’t help, either. Making things worse, Quinnen Williams was spotted arguing with defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton on the sideline during the game.

So when Benigno made his weekly appearance on WFAN’s “Tiki & Tierney”, he had his ire for Saleh and the coaches ready to go.

“They stink. This coaching staff is a freaking disaster," Benigno said. "Starting with Robert Saleh, and we saw it again, no accountability whatsoever. Dumb penalties that continue to just destroy this team.

"John Franklin-Myers with the ridiculous roughing the passer penalty that winds up costing them a touchdown – by the way, it would be nice if Jordan Whitehead could wrap up the guy, (Tyler) Boyd, instead of letting him go for 56 yards for a touchdown. OK, the secondary stinks too, but the coaching staff right on down the line. …

“This stuff is killing this team. They’re not good enough to overcome and avoid this, and to me it’s all on the coaching staff, guys. All on the coaching staff, and it starts with the head coach.”

It’s been a tumultuous year for Saleh already. His “keeping receipts” reaction to their Week 1 loss to the Jets was roundly criticized, but New York bounced back and delivered a strong performance in Week 2. Tumbling back down in Week 3 has crushed at least some of the optimism surrounding the Jets.

We’ll see which version we get in Week 4 when the Jets travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers.
