Tiki isn’t saying that Joe Douglas is on the hot seat, but after drafting Zach Wilson with the second overall pick, he is saying that the GM’s seat is at least warming up, and is trying to use this offseason to save himself.
“While not technically on the hot seat, Joe Douglas is making every move to stop the ticking down on his tenure,” Tiki said. “Maybe I’m scratching a little flint underneath the seat of Joe Douglas. When you draft a quarterback especially high in the first round and he’s trending towards a bust, your seat gets a little warm.”
Citing previous GMs who haven’t survived high-draft quarterback busts, Tiki says Joe Douglas, despite the other strong draft picks he has made at other positions, like this season’s Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, needs to get an Aaron Rodgers trade done, and set the future Hall of Famer up for success within the Jets offense. Only that would cool his seat back down.
“Any time you draft a quarterback in the first round, as a general manager, it flips an hourglass,” Tiki said. “All of a sudden, we’re paying attention to how this kid develops…and if he turns into a bust, history shows you’re not lasting long as general manager.
“Joe Douglas, in my opinion, has his hourglass ticking, and it’s ticking quick. He’s failed on Zach Wilson…and the only way he saves his job is by getting this Aaron Rodgers deal right. It’s obviously bringing in Aaron Rodgers, which we know is gonna happen, but it’s also making it right, so that it’s not a diminished Aaron Rodgers who doesn’t have the weapons…who starts bitching about not having this player or that player or the system isn’t right.”
