The Jets have two top-10 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, and have been linked to Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton in recent mocks. Secondary is certainly an area of need for Gang Green, but safety is rarely a position taken in the top five.
But New York also wouldn’t be afraid to trade back if necessary, as long as they are presented with the right deal for either their fourth or tenth overall picks.
“We're always open for business,” general manager Joe Douglas told reporters on Wednesday. “I think in the last two drafts, I had experience going back and coming up.
“If there's an opportunity to trade back, accumulate more picks, more assets and still be in target range to get the players that we're excited about, of course we're gonna consider that.”
Douglas said everything is also being considered in the trade market or free agency, and the Jets expect to be busy between now and the draft.
“I would say there’s a lot of different avenues, lot of different tools to improve your roster,” Douglas said. “Free agency is one of those tools. So I think we have a good opportunity. We have assets we have acquired. We have financial flexibility.
"There’s a lot of conversations that need to be had in the next coming days and weeks before this kicks off, but we’re going to get this team better any avenue we have…If the right opportunity presents itself in the trade market, we’re ready to strike.”
The Jets also have wide receiver Braxton Berrios hanging over the offseason as a question mark, after he broke out as a dynamic special teams contributor, and enjoyed success at wide receiver. The free agent has expressed a desire to return to New York, and the feeling is certainly mutual, according to Douglas.
“With Braxton, I had some good conversations with his representation and we're gonna have more conversations,” Douglas said. “Obviously, Braxton has been awesome since we brought him in. He's an asset to this team.”
