Keith: Jets need to accept Zach Wilson's shortcomings

Keith doesn’t have much faith in Zach Wilson becoming a reliable quarterback, but he did like what he saw from the former No. 2 overall pick on Sunday in crunch time, when he had to improvise outside of the pocket and make throws down the field.

So, he says the Jets need to restructure their playbook around Wilson’s strengths, and understand his limitations, because running an offense that was designed for Aaron Rodgers is not going to work for Gang Green.

“Why are we throwing the ball 36 times in the rain? We know this kid sucks,” Keith said.

“He can’t be like Aaron Rodgers and read the defense. He’s gonna hold onto the ball and be sack Wilson and take sacks. Aaron Rodgers can look at the defense, pre-snap read, snap the ball, and in two seconds, it’s out. He knows where to go with the ball. That’s not Zach Wilson yet.”

The Jets have weapons around Wilson in Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson, but Zach is not currently capable of spreading the ball to his receivers and putting the ball in the end zone. It’s time Nathaniel Hackett adjusts to his quarterback, rather than vice versa.

“They have to keep evolving this offense for this kid if they want to have success,” Keith said. “He’s holding them back as currently constructed, and they’re not gonna be able to win games. They were barely able to win that game against a third-string quarterback.”
