Jersey boy Kenny Pickett finally made his NFL Debut in Week 4, coming in for the Steelers in relief of Mitchell Trubisky, and he found the feast and famine of the league in the span of few plays.
Pickett, entering with Pittsburgh down 10-6 in the third, got two yards on a fourth-and-one sneak to keep his first drive alive, and two plays later, his first career pass attempt ended up in the hands of Jordan Whitehead, who picked off a deep route intended for Chase Claypool:
No harm, no foul, as Minkah Fitzpatrick intercepted Zach Wilson a few plays later to get Pittsburgh the ball back, but still, not an optimal first attempt for the Pitt product and native of Ocean Township.
Oh, but it gets better, as Fitzpatrick returned his pick to the Jets’ four-yard-line, and a three-play drive ended with Pickett scoring on a one-yard run:
Pickett was the Steelers’ first-round pick, but Trubisky, also a former first-rounder, had been the guy for the first three and a half games for Pittsburgh. He was 7-for-13 for 84 yards and an interception in the first half – which ended with a second pick being nullified by a roughing the passer call and getting the Steelers a field goal to make it 10-6.
