The Jets are the latest team to announce that most of their players will not participate in in-person voluntary workouts in preparation for the upcoming season.
In a statement from Gang Green through the NFL Players Association, the Jets said “many” of their players will elect to work out virtually with the COVID-19 pandemic still posing a health risk.
“Football is a labor of love for our men, who work year-round to stay in shape and prepare ourselves to perform at the highest level,” the statement from Jets players read. “Given that we are still in a pandemic and based on the facts provided to our membership by our union about the health and safety benefits of a virtual offseason, many of us will exercise our CBA right and not attend in-person voluntary workouts.”
The Giants were among the several teams to release a similar statement on Thursday. Some teams, including the Browns, cited last year’s success with virtual offseason workouts, and how the lack of in-person attendance did not result in injury increases the following season.
Similar to the Giants’ statement, the Jets expressed their support with players across the league who decided not to attend in-person workouts.
“We respect that every player has a right to make a decision about what it best for him and his family,” the statement read. “And we stand in solidarity with other players across the NFL who are making informed decisions about this offseason.”
