Nathaniel Hackett is under fire from Jets fans for his play calling on consecutive 3rd-and-1s in Sunday’s game against the Giants.
Facing a 3rd-and-1 late in the third quarter, Hackett called for a shotgun set and an empty backfield, resulting in an incomplete pass and a punt. On Gang Green’s next drive, another 3rd-and-1 resulted in another designed pass, this one with Breece Hall coming out of the backfield for a short throw, but Zach Wilson threw it low and incomplete, resulting in another punt.
Wilson looked as if the ball had slipped out of his hand on the throw, as the conditions were we most of the game due to continued rain at MetLife Stadium.
The two play calls from Hackett, electing to throw twice with the struggling Wilson rather than running with the electric Hall, drew heavy criticism from fans on social media, and even reporters in attendance, who called the play calling “awful” and Hackett “a disaster.” Even Evan Roberts called it "inexcusable."
