With Mike White being ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Lions, it means the formerly exiled Zach Wilson will be thrust back into the fire for one of the most important Jets games in years.
Will the former No. 2 overall pick, inactive since his Week 11 clunker against the Patriots, be ready to lead the New York offense to a huge win? Can he have addressed the issues that led to his benching in a matter of weeks?
“Good question. I don’t think it’s impossible,” Robert Saleh said. “He’s done a really nice job. I thought he’s had two of his best throwing days in practice. Now practice, at the end of the day, doesn’t matter. We gotta go do it on Sunday. But felt like he’s been doing a really good job finding completions and getting the ball to where he needs to with accuracy. He’s done a really nice job working deliberately and just tying everything in.”
Wilson put up two dreadful performances against New England, throwing three interceptions in a loss at home, which included turnovers on throws that clearly needed to be thrown out of bounds while under duress. In the road loss, he completed nine of 22 passes for just 77 yards, and a late punt return touchdown gave the Pats a 10-3 win.
After the game, Wilson quickly shot down the idea that he had let the stout Jets defense down, and was benched in favor of White soon after. He hasn’t dressed since, but Saleh believes he can quickly rectify what plagued him while he was the starter.
“For him, it’s really just making the easy, easy,” Robert Saleh said. “With regards to getting your feet in the direction they need to go, get your body set, and deliver the ball the way he knows how.
“He's the same quarterback that once went 18-for-18 in a bowl game, so he's very capable. It's just a matter of just being conscientious and tying everything together.”
