As the Jets get set for a daunting Cowboys pass rush in Week 2 with backup quarterback Zach Wilson leading the way, head coach Robert Saleh insists that the team is in a good place despite losing Aaron Rodgers for the season.
“Everyone’s in really great spirits,” Saleh said. “Everyone believes in themselves, and we believe we have a really good football team.
“We’ve got a championship defense, we’ve got great skill guys on offense, and we’ve got an offensive line that is continuing to jell.”
As for the quarterback, Saleh says the belief from himself and the team is no different than the belief in the rest of the roster, pointing to last season’s team success before flatlining down the stretch to fall short of the playoffs.
“We've got a lot of faith in Zach,” Saleh said. “People forget he was 5-1 before the bye week, and before half the offense was decimated with injury a year ago. Got a lot of faith in the group that we’ve got.”
Things went downhill quickly after that 5-1 start, as Wilson struggled, seemingly drew the ire of his defense for not accepting blame following a loss to the Patriots, and his benching seemed to be very warmly welcomed by the team, which gravitated toward backup Mike White. Now, as the team has no choice but to move forward with Wilson again, Saleh believes the former No. 2 overall pick is in a better place to thrive.
