Sal Licata was all aboard the Aaron Rodgers hype train when he was traded to the Jets, but after watching one episode of Hard Knocks, he has big concerns that Rodgers is already playing a role in Gang Green not becoming a championship operation.
How? Simply by taking up all the spotlight and the attention in the locker room, where it needs to be directed towards Robert Saleh.
“The Jets are the Aaron Rodgers show,” Sal said. “I’s not supposed to be like that, where you have the quarterback running the entire show, and as the alpha male.
“The structure is not set up for Super Bowl success, and that’s what’s being thrown out there with the Jets, which I understand. You bring in a four-time MVP, the expectations should be Super Bowl. But the head coach is kind of being neutered here with Aaron Rodgers. I didn’t get a full, clear feel that Robert Saleh is the leader of this Jets team. Aaron Rodgers is the leader, but the head coach in the NFL is supposed to be the leader.”
Sal doesn’t question Rodgers’ ability or his leadership skills, but he struggles to see how the Jets can reach their full potential if the head coach’s voice is being muffled by the quarterback, which is what it looks like to Sal so far.
“For the record, I wanted Rodgers. Derek Carr, I wanted no part of,” Sal said. “But some in that building were hesitant to go all in on Aaron Rodgers, and maybe because they know, once Aaron Rodgers steps foot in that building, he is running the show. Maybe there are things the head coach wants to do or say that he may not be able to, because he doesn’t have the pedigree that Aaron Rodgers does.
“The head coach should be the alpha male. The setup the Jets have…Robert Saleh is not the alpha male. He is not the leader of this Jets team. Aaron Rodgers is.”
