Jets fans, and perhaps even the Jets themselves, have seemingly given up on Zach Wilson, who will be benched the rest of the way in favor of Mike White as the team prepares to make one last dash at a playoff berth.
Despite continued public comments from Robert Saleh and Mike LaFleur that express belief in Wilson’s ability to turn things around, the former No. 2 overall pick has shown no signs of being a successful NFL quarterback, and the fanbase seems ready to move on.
It’s for that reason that Sal Licata hopes to see Wilson thrive on another team, even a divisional rival.
“What I do want to see is Zach Wilson go somewhere else and have success,” Sal said. “You know why? Stick it to the Jets fans that want him jettisoned before playing a full year. I want him to go to New England and really stick it to you.
“You think Zach Wilson stinks? I want to see what he does with Bill Belichick, with a real head coach.”
Jets fans seem so convinced that Wilson is a bust, but Sal is convinced that he was doomed to be a bust when he was drafted by a team that hasn’t shown an ability to develop a quarterback in nearly half a century. So, he still believes there is a chance Wilson can be a good NFL quarterback.
“I do think there could be,” Sal said. “I do know this. The Jets have developed so many quarterbacks in the last 30, 40, 50 years to give them the benefit of the doubt…I have to bow to the Jets, who clearly know how to develop a quarterback.
“Everybody wants him out of here after not playing a full year!”
