The Texans are trading edge rusher Shaq Lawson to the New York Jets just one day after the end of their preseason, according to multiple media reports.
Lawson, who the Texans acquired this offseason from the Miami Dolphins in a trade for linebacker Benardrick McKinney, never really stood out during his short time in Houston.
For New York, the move presumably comes in an attempt to fill the void left by defensive end Carl Lawson (no relation), who was lost to a season-ending Achilles injury during camp.
Lawson played deep into second halves during Texans preseason games, a sign of a player on the fringe of making the 53-man roster. He recorded just five tackles in the three preseason games with Houston, and none in the finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night.
The Jets are reportedly sending a sixth-round pick to the Texans for Lawson, who the Buffalo Bills drafted 19th overall out of Clemson in 2016. This will be Lawson's fourth team in the last three seasons.
Lawson exits a crowded group of defensive lineman as roster cuts loom in the coming days.
The Texans still have Whitney Mercilus, Jacob Martin, Charles Omenihu, Jordan Jenkins, Jonathan Greenard and Derek Rivers as defensive ends.
