Tiki says Zach Wilson’s performance can no longer be placed on coaching, the offensive line, or any other excuse that can be conjured up for his struggles since being drafted No. 2 overall in 2021.
It is simply time to acknowledge that Wilson is not a good quarterback, and backup Tim Boyle would be a better option at this point.
“Zach Wilson thinks he knows what to do with the football. He actually has no idea what to do with the football,” Tiki said. “I want to say it’s coaching, but that’s too easy of a blame. I want to say he’s still learning and he’s still young, but the problem is, it feels like he’s still a rookie, and he’s in his third season. I can’t put that on new players, a new system, new situations. There is a confidence that he lacks. There is an outward confidence that he has, but it’s fake. It’s not real.
“I went and looked at Tim Boyle’s starts with the Lions. He stands in the pocket, knows what he wants to do with the football, and he delivers. It might not always be right, but it doesn’t matter. Zach Wilson doesn’t even do that. We’re talking about Tim Boyle. They are better off starting Tim Boyle.”
Unfortunately for Jets fans wanting to see a change, Robert Saleh told reporters after Sunday’s loss that Wilson will remain the starting quarterback, and Boyle would not get any first-team reps at practice this week. So, the team will continue to hold out hope that Wilson eventually shows signs of promise, before the season comes completely off the rails.
