Zach Wilson heard loud boos throughout his latest clunker in Thursday night’s loss to the Jaguars, which all but eliminated Gang Green from playoff contention.
The boos gave way to chants for backup Chris Streveler, and finally stopped when Wilson was benched in the second half. The reaction from the home crowd was a far cry from the fanbase’s excitement in Wilson potentially being the franchise quarterback that the Jets have starved for when he was drafted second overall just a year ago.
“You don’t blame them,” Wilson said after the loss. “We have a very passionate fanbase and they are here to watch us score touchdowns and we are not scoring touchdowns. We’re not getting first downs, we’re not moving the ball, we obviously can’t throw the ball. Of course they are going to be frustrated.”
The Jets offense managed just three points in front of their home fans, with Wilson showing more of the same inaccuracies that have plagued him throughout his young NFL career. The fans are clearly fed up and want to see change, and Wilson’s teammates can only feel for their quarterback, who has clearly lost the fanbase after Thursday’s nightmarish outing.
“To be in the spotlight and have your team's stadium booing for you, I can't imagine what that feels like,” Connor McGovern said. “That's got to be a very tough feeling.
“It was hard the first time it happened, and I’d have to imagine in the middle of a game, it’s hard. This job is not easy…nobody takes any of this lightly.”
