The Knicks are reportedly parting ways with general manager Scott Perry when his contract expires this summer, and Boomer and Gio are wondering what the job description would be for whoever takes Perry’s place.
“This is a tough thing to know because Leon Rose doesn’t speak…but what is that job exactly?” Gio said. “What is the general manager job for the Knicks if Leon Rose is the one making the call on this stuff?
“I don’t know if this is just a collaborative effort, I don’t know if Leon Rose leans on that GM or leaned on Scott Perry so much…I really don’t know how it works. I just assumed Leon Rose is the big dog, and anyone below him is doing anything he wants.”
It’s hard to say what Perry’s influence was on the decision making for the Knicks in recent years, but when he took the job, he was tasked with managing albatross contracts like Joakim Noah, Enes Kanter, and Lance Thomas, and now, the team has made the playoffs in two out of the last three years, and looks well set up for the future.
“We thought when Scott Perry came, it was about relationships and attracting free agents and that kind of stuff. He ultimately didn’t do that,” Boomer said. “But I give him high marks for getting rid of Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis. He made those trades, he drafted the teams we have now with most of these young players. He got rid of Kevin Knox and Cam Reddish after acquiring him. I think he did a decent job.”
