The Knicks have been quiet so far with just over a day remaining until the NBA trade deadline, a break from the mold after making some big moves well before the deadline in recent years (most recently OG Anunoby).
But rumors regarding the Suns’ interest in trading Kevin Durant has sparked intrigue, with some even wondering if New York - a team that could use another wing - could be in play for the future Hall of Famer who spurned them for the Nets five years ago.
Durant is over 36 years old but still can play, as he is averaging just under 27 points per game on the season while shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from downtown. But Boomer Esiason wouldn’t want any part of that for the Knicks.
“I don’t want him here. I don’t want him here at all. Does that sound stupid?” Boomer said. “Is everybody supposed to bend over backwards for Kevin Durant for him to win another championship? Is that the idea here?
“That means someone on the Knicks is gonna sit and lose valuable time they have been playing up to this point. I was thinking, if the Knicks were gonna do something, it was gonna be a bench piece. If Anunoby is coming back, they have their starting five, and they have played well together.”
The Knicks starting five has been one of the best in basketball this season, but the bench needs help. Durant would cause a starter to drop back to the bench, upgrading that unit as a result. But Boomer would be worried about the team chemistry, and doesn’t want the Knicks to give up valuable assets for Durant.
“They have six guys, seven guys that they can legitimately count on...bringing in someone of that stature to the Knicks, I think that upsets the apple card,” Boomer said.
“There is something to be said about a team that is playing together and likes each other.”
