BT: If Jalen Brunson contract extension report is true, build him a statue right now

According to Steve Popper of the New York Post, Jalen Brunson has made it known that he is willing to sign a four-year, $156 million contract extension this summer, instead of waiting another year when he would be eligible to sign a five-year, $270 million.

The move would give the Knicks much more financial flexibility moving forward, while also allowing Brunson to hit free agency a year earlier and potentially earn another big contract. But to leave that much money on the table, BT says it somehow adds to his New York legend, which is already at a fever pitch as he has risen to stardom.

"I don't know how he can be more revered…this is insane," BT said. "From his agent's perspective and a business perspective, that is sheer lunacy. That is just idiotic.

"If he actually does go forward with that, erect the statue of this man now. If he is willing to leave $120 million to give Leon Rose more flexibility to build out a championship roster, I didn't think I could love this guy any more. That is insane."

If Brunson does agree to that extension, BT finds it hard to see how he doesn't immediately become the most beloved pro athlete in New York, if he isn't already.

"Who leaves $100 million on the table?" BT said. "One hundred!"
