BT was flying solo on Friday, so you KNEW he was going to have a lot to say about the Knicks’ draft night, which saw them make a flurry of deals that netted them about $13 million in cap space and a few conditional first-round picks, but no tangible assets other than a second-round selection of Duke’s Trevor Keels.
And, well, we were right, with Tierney following the suit of many others in wondering exactly what the heck the Knicks were doing.
“I mean, come on, that was one of the most confusing and perplexing nights in the history of the New York Knicks – and that’s saying a mouthful,” BT said to open the show. “Let me encapsulate the night, because still, no one really knows what the hell happened.”
BT further explained that in talking about it, he was going to choose the responsible route instead of the irresponsible route, because he’s all about accountability and was going to hold team president Leon Rose accountable.
“I have to stress to you: it’s not over yet. Now, that doesn’t satisfy your demands, but here’s the bottom line: let’s say that Leon Rose was hired in March 2022 and not March 2020. Last night would’ve been awesome!” BT said, before it turned dark. “You’d say he came in and accrued all these first-round picks and all this equity, we can start getting rid of all the guys we don’t want here – but the problem is that Leon Rose is the one who brought all those people here! That’s the Knicks aspect of this: the president made all these moves, and it’s not like he waltzed in here and saw a disaster and had to clean up someone else’s incompetence; what he had to do was accrue a small army of picks to get rid of the undesirable commodities he himself brought here!”
BT also wasn’t exactly feeling the reason Rose is making all these moves: a mid-level player?
“He’s moving mountains to have a chance to get Jalen Brunson…I like Jalen Brunson, he’s a good player, but he’s not a difference maker!” BT exhorted. “If you get him, whatever, I’ll be excited, because he’ll be a million times better than any other C-/D+ point guard they’ve had, but honestly: is Jalen Brunson a star, or is he Fred VanVleet?”
Well, later in the show, Brandon doubled down, because Rose released a statement about the night that just further sent BT down the rabbit hole.
Of course, in reading the Tweet with the statement, Brandon had some snide remarks about the remarks, and when he was done…well, he actually asked Knicks fans to let this play out further?
“Let’s say he had a press conference and that was his opening statement…while many of you are disgusted, I implore you to at least see what the man’s final vision is here,” BT said. “There is no way in hell he made those moves, and is going to sit on a total of 22 picks – 11 in the first round – over the next seven years, and not do some big things over the summer.”
And if he doesn’t?
“Well, then it’s probably time to find someone else for the job, but I don’t think that’s going to happen,” BT said. “I’m not completely abandoning Leon Rose here, but I don’t believe too much in the vision so far, because a lot of what he did last night was to mask prior moves, and that’s not optimal.”
