Carmelo Anthony announced his retirement on Monday, and while Evan is a steady supporter of the former Knick, he couldn’t help but notice the timing of Anthony’s announcement.
“Do you find the timing of it kind of odd?” Evan asked Craig. “Carmelo Anthony was a tremendous Denver Nugget…but here the Denver Nuggets are, for the first time since moving to the NBA, on the verge of an NBA Finals, something Carmelo Anthony didn’t accomplish, is it odd that on the eve of that, [he wants to make himself the story]?”
Evan isn’t sure if the timing was intentional, as the franchise he requested a trade from looks to sweep the Lakers on Monday night and reach the NBA Finals, but the timing of it does serve as a reminder of what Anthony wasn’t able to accomplish with his first NBA team, before coming to New York.
“I think Carmelo Anthony was a great player who was a first ballot Hall of Famer,” Evan said. “With that said, it kind of makes him look bad…To announce your retirement as the team you are most known for is about to do something you couldn’t do with them, you were Mr. First Round Exit when you were with Denver…I just find it a little odd, that’s all.”
Still, that question shouldn’t overshadow what Anthony was able to do on the court, regardless of his lack of playoff success outside of his trip to the Western Conference Final with Denver.
“He was a great player,” Evan said. “Before Jalen Brunson was willing you in a game six, Carmelo Anthony was. I’m just saying it’s a little weird to be announcing it right before the Nuggets are about to win the Western Conference Final.”
