The Knicks will once again be on superstar watch this summer, searching for their missing piece to help them take the next step after a promising season ended with a playoff series win.
For Gio, the top option is one that has been linked to New York for years now.
“I don’t want them to overrate their season or what happened in the playoffs because of what Miami is doing to Boston,” Gio said. “They need another star to pair with Jalen Brunson.
“If they can get Damian Lillard, that would be absolutely bonkers. That would be the guy. Those would be all the assets you would move to go and get him…as many picks as they want.”
Lillard is likely in the back end of his prime, soon to be 33 years old, and injuries have caused him to play in just 87 games over the last two seasons, though he earned an All-Star nod this past season after averaging a superb 32.2 points and 7.3 assists per game while shooting 46.3 percent from the field. For that kind of scoring production, Gio would sell the farm to make it happen.
“I think Immanuel Quickley would have to be in that deal, if they somehow would take Julius Randle back…you can sell him as an All-NBA guy and an All-Star,” Gio said.
“Outside of Jalen Brunson, everyone else should be on the table.”
Boomer asked if that meant Gio would be open to trading RJ Barrett after his promising postseason performance, and Gio didn’t hesitate.
“If there is an opportunity, I don’t think there’s anyone outside of Jalen Brunson who you say, ‘we’re not trading that guy,’” Gio said.
