We know Boomer bleeds Madison Square Garden blue, but Gio is also a Knicks fan, too – and he, like many, was baffled at the team’s decision to deal their first-round pick to Oklahoma City amidst a slew of deals that saves them a bunch of cap space.
“Why did they not get a player? You want to tell me that the $4 million or whatever it is they saved because they didn’t make a first-round pick means so much to them that they’re not going to bring in a young player on a rookie contract?” Gio asked.
All things considered, the Knicks cleared close to $13 million by not making that pick and trading Kemba Walker to Detroit, and they also netted three potential future first-round picks in the process (while only giving up four extraneous second-rounders).
Not enough for Gio, who doesn’t understand why a player like Jalen Brunson is worth all of this effort.
“You want to clear cap space for the best players – LeBron James in 2010, or Kevin Durant in 2016,” Gio said. “Those are the guys you move mountains to try to bring in. I like Jalen Brunson, and I hope he ends up on the team, but you don’t forego a first-round pick for Jalen Brunson!”
All Boomer could do was say, basically, “same old Knicks.”
“A French guy, no less, who was on stage for all of 30 seconds and got booed!” he laughed. “Booed and whisked away, and traded in less than a minute – that’s the full Knicks experience right there!”
The Booms was hoping “a Feel-Good Friday would start around pick 11 in the NBA Draft” and he got his wish, albeit in a back-handed way…but for Gio, it was so frustrating that he had to invoke the thought of what one Sports Pope might say on the air about the Knicks’ draft.
That you’re gonna have to listen to, ughkay, but take a listen to it all!
