Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau told reporters before Saturday's game that Julius Randle will also be out on Sunday against the Magic, and his season is likely over.
Randle, out Saturday against the Cavaliers with a sore quad, missed three games late last month for the same injury, the only games he had missed all season, aside from a brief stint in COVID-19 protocols.
"He's out tomorrow and will most likely be out the rest of the way," Thibodeau said. "He's had this nagging thing going on for a while."
Randle, if his season is indeed over, finishes with an average of 20.1 points per game, down from 24.1 last season, while shooting a career-worst 41 percent from the field. His 3-point percentage dropped 10 percent from last year's surge, when he was the NBA's Most Improved Player.
With the Knicks officially eliminated from playoff contention, there is little reason for Randle to push through his injury. Now, after a season filled with disappointment, periodic lack of effort and disdain from the New York fanbase, attention will turn towards Randle's future with the Knicks, just one year after he was seen as a franchise savior.
