Knicks All-Star Julius Randle underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle and is expected to be ready for training camp this fall, the team announced on Saturday.
Randle, coming off his second All-NBA season in three years for the Knicks, sprained the ankle twice in the span of a month, the second time coming in a clinching game five win over the Cavaliers in what was New York's first playoff series victory in 10 years.
Randle was the team's leading scorer in 2022-23, but after playing in each of the team's first 77 games in the regular season, his first ankle sprain kept him out of the remainder of the regular season and put his postseason availability in doubt. Randle did suit up, and while he was not much of a factor against Cleveland, the Knicks cruised into game five with a 3-1 series lead.
There, Randle had his best half of the postseason, dishing out five assists in the first quarter, but reaggravated the ankle injury with a second sprain, sidelining him for the rest of the game and for game one of the second round against the Heat.
Randle returned after game one, but never looked near the player he was during the regular season, resulting in frustration from fans, who criticized Randle for another lackluster playoff performance, though his recent surgery sheds some light on what he was dealing with during the postseason.
