Sal and Jerry: RJ Barrett extension shouldn't diminish Knicks chances of landing Donovan Mitchell

The Knicks are keeping RJ Barrett after signing the 22-year-old to a four-year extension, and as reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the contract extension complicates the team's chances of acquiring Donovan Mitchell.

But Sal and Jerry wonder why that has to be given the other assets New York can still offer.

"If the Jazz know what they want, and apparently it's the picks…the Knicks are dealing from a position of power. They have the picks," Sal said. "It's not like they're trying to rip them off."

The Knicks won't be dealing away Barrett, but they also have several other youngsters who the Jazz reportedly covet. Quentin Grimes was reportedly desired by Utah in addition to Barrett, which the Knicks felt was too much.
When it comes to Grimes, Sal would also like to keep him, but says everyone else should be fair game.

"Cam Reddish? Couldn't care less," Sal said. "Obi Toppin? I like him, but I'd be OK if he left. The one guy is Quentin Grimes. I'm OK with Obi Toppin and I understand Immanuel Quickley has potential, but someone's gotta go the other way…probably gonna be those three players or two of the three to get it done."

Sal likes the contract for Barrett, and doesn't agree that the extension means the road to acquiring Mitchell has gotten a lot tougher.

"This was the right move to me for the Knicks," Sal said. "I still think they should be able to get it done, with or without RJ Barrett."
