The Knicks announced Friday that they have waived center Taj Gibson, in a somewhat anticipated offseason move for the ‘Bockers.

Gibson had reportedly been receiving trade interest from “multiple teams,” but New York instead waived the 37-year-old whose contract for next season is non-guaranteed and for $5.1 million.

Gibson was a solid depth center for the Knicks since originally signing with the team before the 2019-20 season. He played in 52 games last season and averaged 4.4 points and 4.4 rebounds, and averaged 53 and 4.7 in those categories over his three seasons in New York, his native state.

But with the Knicks acquiring Isaiah Hartenstein and signing Mitchell Robinson to an extension, Gibson’s role became less necessary, even after New York also traded Nerlens Noel to clear cap space to sign Jalen Brunson.
