The Knicks will almost certainly be in the hunt for a point guard upgrade this offseason, and a recent opponent could be on their radar once that search begins.
According to Ian Begley of SNY, Dennis Schroder is among the players on the team’s radar when looking ahead to free agency. Schroder was just in Madison Square Garden on Monday night, when the Knicks took down the shorthanded Lakers 111-96 for their third win in a row.
Schroder finished with a team-high 21 points in 37 minutes while shooting 7-for-13 from the floor and 6-for-6 from the free throw line, but turned it over five times and was a -5 on the night.
The 27-year-old is averaging 15.3 points and 5.3 assists per game this season, his first with the Lakers. He’s also averaging 2.9 turnovers per game, his highest since the 2016-17 season.
With Derrick Rose, Elfrid Payton and Frank Ntilikina all becoming free agents this offseason, New York will certainly be in need of another point guard, and will have the cap space to make an upgrade. But Schroder’s asking price as an unrestricted free agent may be high, as ESPN reported last month that Schroder turned down a four-year, $84 million extension from the Lakers, though it was unclear how much of that money was guaranteed.
If the Knicks feel Schroder’s asking price doesn’t fit his production, they could pivot to Lonzo Ball, who they reportedly had interest in prior to the trade deadline. Ball is a restricted free agent after this season.
