When 2024 NBA championship odds opened at the BetMGM online sportsbook in June 2023, the New York Knicks were buried and remained buried when the season began four months later.
That’s not the case this season.
Fourteen teams opened with shorter odds to win the 2024 NBA Finals than the Knicks (+4000), including the team they defeated in the postseason two months earlier in the Cleveland Cavaliers (+2500). New York dropped to +5000 by the season opener before steadily climbing over the next six months.
In June, the Knicks opened with the seventh-shortest odds, tied with the Philadelphia 76ers at +1600. But when the season opened on Tuesday, they were +650 and behind only two teams:
Celtics: +325
Thunder: +500
Knicks: +650
76ers: +1000
Nuggets: +1100
Mavericks: +1200
Timberwolves: +1200
Bucks: +1400
The Knicks are +350 to win the Eastern Conference — +1800 at this time last year — and +200 to win the Atlantic Division. In both futures markets, they’re behind only the Celtics.
New York is -10000 to make the playoffs, +850 to win the NBA Cup, and have a win total of 53.5. If the total goes over, it’ll be the team’s most wins since 2012-13, the only season with at least 54 wins since 1997.
