Knicks rookie Quentin Grimes found an opportunity for more playing time for the shorthanded Knicks on Sunday, and he may have earned himself more moving forward.
With RJ Barrett and Obi Toppin in the NBA's health and safety protocols, and Alec Burks out due to the birth of his child, Grimes got the start against the Bucks on Sunday and immediately wrote himself into the franchise record books, knocking down seven 3-pointers before the third quarter was even over, marking a Knicks rookie record.
Grimes knocked down seven of his first 11 triples, the seventh coming with just three minutes gone by in the second half, knocking down a deep contested 3-pointer to bring the Knicks to within 11.
Grimes, New York's 25th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, entered the game having appeared in 13 contests, averaging just over six minutes per game. But he was ready when his name was called.
"I just gotta stay ready every day…you never know," Grimes said. "Like today, we had two guys down. [Kevin Knox] stepped up big, I did what I did, and you gotta always stay ready. Late nights, before practice, after practice, you gotta always feel like you're gonna start a game, because you never know when your number might be called."
Grimes' minutes might be going up after Sunday's shooting performance, but nothing will chance about his preparation, as he has made it a point to prepare all season as if he were a regular starter.
"I never know when my number might be called," Grimes said. "I can't be ready to only play 12 minutes. I just try to be in tip-top shape and do extra lifting and do everything I can to take care of my body."
