UPDATE: ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reports Friday morning that Robinson has undergone surgery on the broken finger, and "fully plans" on playing in game one of the Finals on Wednesday night.
James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reports that there is still no concrete timetable as of now, but by the sound of it, Robinson is going to give it a go as the Knicks chase their first title in 53 years.
Perhaps some crushing news for the Knicks as the NBA Finals get set to tip off next week: center Mitchell Robinson broke his right pinkie finger earlier this week, and his status for the Finals is unclear.
Per Fred Katz of The Athletic, there is no word from Robinson or the Knicks on how the injury occurred, or any timetable for Robinson to be out.
The Knicks completed a sweep of the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals on Monday night, advancing to the championship round for the first time since 1999, and will begin play against either the Spurs – who were the winners of the Knicks’ 1999 appearance – or the defending champion Thunder on June 3.
Either will be a tough matchup for the Knicks’ frontcourt – the Spurs with All-World 7-foot-5 unicorn Victor Wembanyama, the Thunder with Chet Holmgren and ex-Knick Isaiah Hartenstein – and losing Robinson would mean Ariel Hukporti could be pressed into more action.
Robinson, who has been injury-plagued throughout his career, played 60 games this year – his most since 2021-22 – while on a load management plan, and he led the league with a 20.1 offensive rebound percentage while notching 4.2 offensive boards per game, fourth-best in the league.
He has played in all 14 playoff games so far, and averaged 4.5 points, 5.8 boards, and 0.3 blocks in 13.3 minutes per game in the sweep of Cleveland.
Hukporti, a 2024 second-round pick of Dallas who was dealt to the Knicks on draft night, played 54 games this season but averaged just 9.2 minutes in those games, with 2.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks per game.
