Both a Jets and Giants defensive standout have received franchise tags in the past 24 hours.
The Giants have reportedly tagged Leonard Williams, per Ian Rapoport, while Jets safety Marcus Maye was tagged by the Jets on Monday.
Williams, a former Jet, and the Giants reportedly worked on a potential long-term deal, which New York has said is the team's desire, but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement by Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline. The defensive lineman played on a franchise tag last season at just over $16 million, meaning the 26-year-old's salary for this season will be roughly $19.35 million.
Tagging Williams will make other moves more difficult for the Giants in terms of salary cap space, including defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson, who could make north of $10 million next season.
Williams posted 11.5 sacks last season and was the team's top pass rusher.
Maye, who turned 28 on Tuesday, will receive an estimated $10.5 million as a result of his franchise tag, unless he and the Jets can come to a long-term agreement by July 15. Like Williams and the Giants, the Jets have expressed their desire to lock up Maye long term. He became the leader of the team's secondary last season after Jamal Adams was traded, and finished the year with two interceptions, two sacks and two forced fumbles.
