It was made official on Wednesday that June 30 will be Mark Chernoff’s final day as VP of Programming for WFAN and CBS Sports Radio, as current WIP PD Spike Eskin will transition into that role this summer before officially taking over on July 1, WFAN’s 34th anniversary.
We often call our esteemed boss a legend in radio, and if you doubted those creds, doubt no more, because later this year, Mark Chernoff will add another title to his resume: Hall of Famer.
Chernoff was announced Wednesday as one of four members of the New York State Broadcasters’ Association’s Hall of Fame Class of 2021, putting the cap on a nearly 40-year career at WNEW, WXRK, and WFAN here in NYC.
“Mark Chernoff is a legendary radio executive in New York sports radio,” NYSBA President David Donovan said in the official release. “He has helped guide WFAN in New York City for nearly 30 years. His passion for radio is unsurpassed.”
“When people think of WFAN, names like Imus, ‘Mike & The Mad Dog’ or Boomer often come to mind, but no name has been more responsible for the consistent excellence of 'The Fan' than Chernoff,” added Audacy’s New York Market Manager, Chris Oliviero, aka “The Architect.”
Chernoff’s classmates include Nexstar Media President Tim Busch, Syracuse-area meteorologist Wayne Mahar, and Buffalo-based news anchor Jacquie Walker, all four of whom were selected from member-submitted nomination and will be officially honored this fall in NYC.
“The Class of 2021 represents the best in the broadcasting profession,” Donovan said of the group. “While the inductees represent a cross section of broadcasters from across the state, they share one key characteristic: they have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to serve their local communities.”
Congratulations, Mark!
