As two of the biggest starting pitchers on the free agent market remain unsigned, Sal believes the Mets have a better chance of signing Jordan Montgomery than the Yankees do of signing Blake Snell before the 2024 season begins.

BT, who was initially convinced that Snell would eventually come to the Bronx, is now beginning to lean towards Sal’s prediction, noting that some top free agent starters for next winter are already off the market (like Zack Wheeler and Tyler Glasnow).

“If you don’t get Montgomery now, based on some other guys who wont’ be there next year,” Sal said. “You might be better off signing him for this year and next year.

“It’s more about next year.”

Regardless of what the Mets do, Sal says the likes of Montgomery and Snell need to go against their superagent in Scott Boras and come down on their contract demands, or else they won’t be pitching in 2024.

“If you want to play, you gotta lower the asking price,” Sal said. “Otherwise you’re gonna be sitting out.”
