Francisco Alvarez is second ranked prospect in baseball in latest rankings, Anthony Volpe eighth

MLB.com updated its prospect rankings this week, and Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is right near the top.

The hyped 20-year-old is No. 2 overall in the league rankings, behind only Detroit's Riley Greene, meaning Alvarez is the top prospect on the list among players who have yet to play in the bigs, as Greene has already made his debut with Detroit.

Alvarez smoked 18 home runs in 67 games with Double-A Binghamton this season, and has now been promoted to Triple-A. His rapid ascent has led to some reported internal debate about whether to bring him up to the majors this season, according to our own Evan Roberts.

Also in the top 10 is Yankees shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe, who has caught fire after a slow start in Double-A and is at No. 8 in the rankings. The New Jersey native is up to a .790 OPS on the season with Double-A Somerset, and has shown some pop with 11 home runs.

Yankees prospects Oswald Peraza and Jasson Dominguez are ranked 40th and 41st, respectively, while Mets prospect Brett Baty is 22nd on the list.
